What is Publishing?

Music Publishing is the business behind a song or composition.. By its very nature, music publishing is about managing and serving the songwriter/song. For anyone who has ever tried the "just ask" method of getting music permission, it is immediately clear that this very basic aspect of serving well is not as simple as it sounds. One role of a music publisher is ensuring rights are licensed properly. Most importantly, they help collect what songs earn, which is much more complicated and fractured than music distribution. Publishers serve songwriters and help them earn a living.

Key Aspects of Music Publishing

Management of Copyrights: Music publishers assist songwriters in registering their creations, ensuring these creations are documented and known for identification, earning, and protection.

Collecting Royalties: Publishers gather different categories of royalties from various places. These places are performance royalties, mechanical royalties, and other royalties.

Licensing (including Sync/Synchronization): With ReverbNation Publishing, you are also opting in to have ReverbNation handle licensing for the songs and recordings you opted in. Music can be licensed for use in a variety of contexts, such as movies, television shows, ads, and video games. Synchronization (Sync or Synch) refers to licensing music to be synchronized with a specific visual piece of content—a movie, for example. Sync requires specific permission and negotiation.

About ReverbNation Publishing:

ReverbNation partnered with Warner Chappell Music to offer ReverbNation Publishing to users. As part of ReverbNation, users must opt-in to ReverbNation Licensing, which gives ReverbNation the ability to License (and Sync) your song composition and recording. This Rights Administration and Licensing program allows us to take care of many matters related to Publishing and Licensing. Behind the scenes, Warner Chappell Music administers all of ReverbNation Publishings’ specific songs that were opted-in, then passes the royalties collected on to ReverbNation to give to the specific song’s songwriter.
